Stones River Angus sits on 25 acres in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on rolling hills once occupied by Union troops during the Civil War. The farm has been in the Rooker family since the early 1800's. This is documented by the date, "1810," stamped into one of the logs on the old farm house, currently being remodeled.
The commercial herd was replaced by registered Angus cattle bought from my uncle Alton Fann of Christiana, Tennessee. From this core group of females I was able to establish a prominent group of outstanding cows that flesh easily, have good dispositions, udders and raise top performing offspring. Herd Bulls are bought from Claybrook Angus in Covington, Tennessee and, with the help of Alton Fann, and my friend Charlie Denton of Rockvale, Tennessee, the herd has grown to approximately 20 brood cows.
Cattle are bred to perform on their own with pastures that consist of fescue, orchard grass, and dallisgrass. Calves are not creep fed at any time but they have their own feeding bunk. This allows calves free choice of hay without competition with the cows.
